Sister Olivia Gowan '25


Sister Olivia GowanSister Olivia Gowan graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1912. Only four years later, she became the administrator of the hospital. Under her administration, St. Mary's became one of the first 80 hospitals to be certified by the American College of Surgeons. She received her bachelor of science degree from the College in 1925, and went on to receive a master's in administration of nursing education from Columbia in 1932. She founded the Nursing program at Catholic University and played a pivotal role in the development of the profession of nursing, receiving an award from the Red Cross for meritorious service.
