Whether or not courses are taken here depends on which path one follows to enter the Cytogenetic Technology Program – see below.

For Elective courses - the following recommendations are made: BIO 3020, 3600, 4125, 4130, 4135, 4140, 4210, 4220, Psy 3331 Statistics

Course recommendations for general education: determine with your advisor.

128 credits, of which 42 must be upper division credits (UD), are needed to graduate. Make sure when taking elective courses and general education courses that you keep in mind UD credits. 32 biology credits (minimum grade of ‘C’) are required for the major.

** These courses, while not required for the cytogenetics track, are strongly recommended to provide the student with flexibility should the student decide to switch tracks.

Mayo School of Health Sciences Prerequisites: There are two ways to enter the Cytogenetic Technology Program. 1) Acceptance on completion of your bachelor's degree and meeting the requirements listed below; 2) Entering as a senior where your fourth-year training is valid as the fourth-year completion of your bachelor's degree. If you select this way to enter then you must have completed your general education requirements by the end of your third year. Students entering as fourth-year seniors are expected to complete their bachelor's degree requirements at the time they complete their Cytogenetic Technology Training Program. The following prerequisites are required to apply for admission:

·       Students must have completed three years (90 semester hours) of study, including:

- 23 hours of biology, including microbiology and genetics, with cell biology highly recommended.
- 16 hours of chemistry with biochemistry highly recommended.
- 3 credit hours of math beyond algebra with statistics recommended.

·       Persons who have completed a bachelor's degree must have 16 semester hours in biological or medical sciences and 3 credit hours of math beyond algebra with statistics recommended .

·       Basic computer skills.

·       College cumulative grade point average of at least 2.75 (4.0 scale). Applicants are not selected based on grades alone.
