Jewell has long been aware that men commit most of the violence in communities. Six years ago he organized a retreat to discuss what men could do about it. "We decided to take what we learned and make an organization," he said. One of his allies was the late Bob Brenning, a well-known professor of religion and ethics at St. Scholastica. Together with a few others, they founded Men as Peacemakers. The organization's programs include Mentors in Violence Prevention, training athletes to be leaders in preventing violence, and Mentor Works, which now has over 400 men and women who work with students in area grade schools. |

only men's organization in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin working to end
men's violence. "From the beginning we decided our objective was to change the world by changing the local community," said Frank Jewell '98, executive director of Men as Peacemakers. "We focus on getting men to change their behavior in a positive way." ![]() Frank Jewell '98

Former St. Scholastica Trustee Robert S. Mars Jr. has been on the Men as Peacemakers board
since its inception. "Education is the answer to a great many world and societal ills," he said. "Men assisting children in the schools can make a real difference. It's good not only for the children, it's good for men to devote some of their time to something beyond their immediate interests." |

| Jewell's ties to St. Scholastica go beyond Men as Peacemakers. His wife, Kathleen Busche, is a 1978 graduate. And Brenning, said Jewell, "was a major reason I got a degree. He was an enormous help and resource, and a friend." With Brenning as his advisor, Jewell self - designed a major. "I used my studies as a way to add value to my community." |
