Andy Fahlstrom, a junior for Minneapolis, raised money for Habitat for Humanity in a novel way. He promised that if donors pledged $500, he would sacrifice his long hair for the cause. Donors kicked in $640 and, on March 1, Fahlstrom was shorn. This scissors and electric clippers were wielded by donors who enjoyed themselves thoroughly, including faculty member Nancy Fitzgerald.

Last Lecture Series

One of the most popular events on the Duluth campus each year is the "Last Lecture" presentation, in which students choose a faculty member who gives a hypothetical final lecture that sums up her or his beliefs and advice. Now Alumni Relations is getting into the act by bringing faculty to give their last lectures at alumni gatherings in the Twin Cities and elsewhere. Carol Thompson, assistant professor of health sciences, spoke last fall in the Twin Cities and twice in Colorado. Steve Ostovich, professor of philosophy, spoke in March in the Twin Cities and twice in California. "We look forward to continuing this because it's such a good opportunity to reconnect the alumni and faculty, " noted Beth Pokela, executive director of Alumni Relations. The next "Last Lecture" will be stage before Christmas. Look for details in the fall Times.

They're on their way

The College of St. Scholastica alumni directory is nearing completion and soon the directories will be shipped. This comprehensive new volume is a compilation of the most current data available on over 13,000 St. Scholastica alumni. Information was obtained from questionnaire mailings, telephone verification and/or from alumni records.
The directories are scheduled to be released in late June. All alums who reserved a copy of the directory during the verification phase of the project should receive their copies two to three weeks after the release.

Student Relay for Life

In a chilly, wet spring, the weather broke long enough on the night of April 12-13 for the Student to Student Relay for Life. More than 500 students from St. Scholastica and other colleges and high schools walked through the balmy night to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

How cold was it for Oozeball this year? Student Alumni Association organizers had to hose off three inches of snow from the surface of the mud before the games could begin. But it didn't stop more than 200 participants in 24 teams, including senior Kara Erickson, shown. "Not as much belly sliding, though, as in years when it was warmer," noted Bo Ekmark, associate director of Alumni Relations.

Jello Wrestling Tournament at Winterfest

Take 150 gallons of lime jello. Sprinkle in college students. Top with a $100 prize. That was the recipe for tag-team jello wrestling at Winterfest on campus. The event drew nearly 350 students, who filled the student union with cheers and jeers as 12 teams - men's and women's - thrashed around in the goo. Show are sophomore Ryan Murphy, left and senior Aaron Snyder preparing to do battle. "I got pushed in," said Dan Sepion, coordinator of student activities. "It was cold, and unbelievably sticky. My hair was as hard as a rock. I threw my clothes away."
