Kelly Durick Eder, Ph.D.
×Pamela Freeman, PhD
PhD, University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Evolution Ecology Behavior MS, North Dakota State University, Zoology BA, University of St. Thomas, Biology
I am a broadly trained organismal biologist. Most of my experience is in behavioral ecology and field biology. My current projects investigate the life history tradeoffs, parental investment, and behavior of juvenile eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus). I am interested in behavior during the juvenile period and parent offspring conflict. I have also worked on life history tradeoffs and behavior of juvenile thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Ictidomys tridecemlineatus), individual vocal identification of Barred Owls (Strix varia), and moth diversity in the Queensland, Australia rainforests.
I collaboratively teach Global Challenges, Scientific Solutions: Climate Change, and also teach Animal Behavior and Field Biology. I have also taught Foundations of Biology and Human Biology courses at CSS.
Jenean O'Brien, PhD
Degrees: Ph.D. from the University of Colorado Denver, B.A. from the College of St. Scholastica
Teaches: BIOL 1115: Global Challenges, BIOL 1036: Biology of the Cell, BIOL 3600: Cell Biology, BIOL 4160: Molecular Biology
Research Interests: Cancer biology
Other Interests: Loves being outside, all four seasons
Victoria Olson, M.S.
Instructor: Biology
Victoria Olson has a background in ecology, researching such topics as: invasive species effects on food webs, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and developing antibiotics from soil microbes. Past employment includes the MN Pollution Control Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency. She currently teaches BIO 1116 Novel Antimicrobial Discovery, BIO 1102 Human Biology and Heredity, and BIO 1103 Current Environmental Topics at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. BIO 1116 is a CURE course in collaboration with Tiny Earth, in which students discover new sources of antibiotics from the local soil.
Degrees:
B.S. St. Cloud State University, Ecology and Field Biology
M.S. University of Minnesota, Integrated Biosciences
Lindsay Pacey Allen,
×Sherese Richards, MD, MBA
MD: American University of Antigua; MBA (Healthcare Administration): Plymouth State University
My research interests include musculoskeletal biology, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, bio-gerontology and anatomical education.
I am a clinical anatomist with experience teaching gross, histologic, developmental and neurologic anatomy. I have interest in anatomy as applied to the solution of clinical problems and/or the application of clinical observations to expand anatomical knowledge. I am also passionate about using technology and active learning strategies to improve student engagement, motivation, inclusion and learning outcomes. When away from work, I enjoy spending time with family, traveling and cooking!
Amber Schlater, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Biology
Degrees: Ph.D. in Zoology from Colorado State University; M.Sc. in Zoology from Colorado State University; B.Sc. in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh
Research Interests: I am a comparative physiologist with a background in cells, muscles, rodents, and seals. My research explores phenotypic plasticities of animals in response to extreme environments, from breath-hold exercise to high altitude and high fat diets.
Courses: Anatomy & Physiology (BIO 2510 and BIO 2520); Super Physiology (BIO 3777)
Other Interests: Running, cycling, hiking, camping, canoeing, and doing just about anything outside with my family.
Kara Thoemke, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Biology Ph.D. University of Minnesota B.S. University of Minnesota
Jane Wattrus, MS
Instructor, Biology M.S., Environmental Sciences, University of North Texas, 1993 Certification in Secondary Education, University of Texas, 1985 B.S., Biology, University of Minnesota, 1981
My areas of interest in the biological sciences are at the 'organismal level'. I have taught Field Biology, Ecology, Plant Systematics, Current Environmental Topics and Life Science. I am also the CSS Greenhouse Manager. My research interests are in the areas of sustainability and environmental issues.
