St. Scholastica Advisor Manual

What to expect at your advisement meeting...

The College of St. Scholastica follows the advisement model of Appreciative Advisement (6Ds). See below how your advisement session will go:

Stages Tools to use Open-ended questions for advisors to ask
DISARM - Check-in

Advisors will build rapport with students and create a safe working space.
  • How is life at CSS for you? ...Tell me more?
  • How is the semester going for you?
  • Any highlights or challenges you care to share?
DISCOVER - Learn perspectives

Advisors will ask generative, open-ended questions that help them learn about the student's strengths and abilities.
  • How are you doing in your program and courses?
  • If there was one thing that would make your education better, what would it be?
  • What has surprised you about your program or coursework so far?
DREAM - Ask about dreams

Advisors will ask about the student's hopes and dreams for the future.
  • What do you want to do when you finish your degree?
  • What is your dream job?
DESIGN - Identify current and future plans

Students and advisers co-create a plan for making students' dreams a reality.
  • Do you have a graduation term/date in mind?
  • Do you plan to add other credentials to your major? Such as minor or double major.
  • Are there other credentials required to get to your career goal? Such as CNA.
DELIVER - Encourage and support

Students deliver on the plan co-created during the design phase, and advisors are available to encourage and support.
  • How can your advisor help you achieve success?
  • Do you have any questions about my office hours and how best to contact me?
DON'T SETTLE - Be accountable

Students and advisors set their own internal bar of expectations high.
  • What are your plans for success going forward?
  • What goals have you set for yourself this semester?
